Bresse chicken, known worldwide!
We have been breeding Bresse chickens, or more accurately Bresse Gauloise, of the highest quality in the white variety since 2008. This original French breed is world-renowned and highly valued for its excellent meat and egg quality. Our tricolor chickens (blue legs, white feathers, red comb) also originate from the French breeding center northeast of Lyon.
Bresse chicken Gauloise, white - probably the most famous, also called Tricolore - chicken (blue legs, white plumage, red comb), of France!
The Bresse chicken has enjoyed trademark protection since 1957. According to the regulations governing husbandry, fattening, and marketing, only chickens from the region between Louhans and Bourg-en-Bresse, France, approximately 4000 km² in size, may bear this designation; outside this area, it may only be called Bresse Gauloise!
The excellent meat quality, combined with very good egg production, is remarkable, which is why it is also known as the "Queen of Poultry." It is still customary today to offer it to royalty and every new head of state! It can certainly be considered a national cultural asset of France, first mentioned in 1591, known throughout France since 1862, and holding AOC status since 1957. But before 2008, we hadn't heard much about them. It was my friend and mentor Peter, who lived in southwestern Germany near Saarbrücken and sadly passed away a few years ago, who introduced us to this wonderful breed. At this point, dear Peter (RIP), we say our heartfelt thanks, because without you we probably wouldn't even have these Bresse chickens in our breeding facility! And where else in Germany could you buy such a good Bresse chicken?
The Bresse chicken closely resembles the old landrace breeds Ramelsloher and Minorca in shape, build, and posture. It is medium-sized, with a sturdy body, upright posture, broad and full breast, short, strong beak, medium-sized single comb, red face, bluish-white earlobes, blue legs, a bushy tail with abundant sickles, and dark brown eyes. Egg production in the first year is between 200 and 240 cream-colored eggs; the minimum hatching egg weight is 60g.
Major faults include animals that are too small, narrow, and too light, a tail rise that is too steep, leg color other than a strong blue, red or even lighter eye color, and a poorly developed comb.
Our breeding stock comes directly from the French selection center (herd book breeding). For decades, first-class breeding work has been carried out there; however, with very few exceptions, neither hatching eggs nor breeding stock are available, making it all the more difficult for German hobby breeders. Nevertheless, we were one of the very few who succeeded, and we also visited this region because we wanted to and were able to gain knowledge about breeding and keeping these "turbo chickens."
With constant performance monitoring, we therefore place great emphasis on the typical dual-purpose type of Bresse Gauloise, i.e., very strong breeding animals with the best breeding characteristics, such as very good fertilization and hatching rates, large eggs – our old hens lay 80g heavy, typically cream-colored eggs.
Weather-resistant, fast-growing, with very rapid development of chicks and young birds, excellent fattening qualities, and good feed conversion. Roosters reach sexual maturity at approximately 5 months, hens at 4-5 months. Access to a green outdoor run is highly recommended; the fence does not need to be higher than 1.25m. The birds are very tame and not aggressive.
If we have now sparked your interest, you place great value on the best breeding quality, would like to learn more about this first-class original French old poultry breed with the best pedigree, or are looking for hatching eggs, young animals or the best breeding stock, then please contact us, we look forward to hearing from you!
